In this chapter, we focused on operating systems and their functions within computers. They more ore less serve as a mediator between user and computer. One way to better understand the function of operating systems is to compare a computer system to the human body. For the purpose of comparison, we will compare computer instructions to body movements. In a computer, the CPU or central processing unit would be the brain. The CPU basically controls all computer action by processing code and carrying out instructions. An operating system then, could be thought of as a sort of central nervous system for the computer. It basically interprets what the CPU is doing and translates the result of the computer instruction. In the same way, the central nervous system in the body carries brain impulses that translate into body movement. The shell of a computer can then be compared to the muscles of a body because it allows users to physically see the results of computer instructions. Whereas in the body, muscle contractions show the results of commands from the brain.
