Lately, we have been learning about operating systems and their roles in controlling the operations of computers. When one thinks about it, computers are very similar to human beings. Every computer needs an operating system to control its operations, and to have ways to store and retrieve data, as well as provide a way for users to run programs. This is almost identical to the human brain. The brain is a magnificent piece of architecture that controls the operations of the human body. Like a computers operating system, the brain does many things that humans are not even aware of. Our brain keeps are heart pumping, and our body functions in check. This is similar to a computer, which is constantly executing code, and running processes we are not even aware of. Our brain also allows us to control things consciously, such as our gross motor movements and our speech. A computers operating system also allows users to knowingly execute programs and complete desired tasks.
A computers operating system has to be able to execute many processes at one time, in a very short amount of time. Similarly to a human, which is constantly running thousands of chemical reactions and processes. Unlike computers though, humans are able to complete several tasks at the same time, whereas computers have to have time slices and do not actually complete tasks simultaneously.
Security is also a vital component of operating systems. Similar to humans, a computer needs to have systems in place to keep attacks from happening. This is similar to the immune system of human beings, which has to constantly be on the lookout for viruses and attackers. Computers are constantly being hacked, and if a virus infiltrates the system, their can be a crash. This is identical to humans, as they become ill when they become infected with a virus.
